Current Work
Dr. Alan R. Nelson is an internist-endocrinologist
who was in private practice in Salt Lake City, Utah until becoming
chief executive officer of the American Society of Internal Medicine
(ASIM) in 1992. Following the merger of ASIM with the American
College of Physicians (ACP) in 1998, Dr. Nelson headed the Washington
Office of ACP-ASIM until his semi-retirement in January 2000, and
currently serves as Special Advisor to the EVP/CEO of the College.
He was president of the American Medical Association and currently
serves as a member of the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission,
which advises congress on Medicare issues.
Work Relevant to Hablamos Juntos
A member of the prestigious Institute of Medicine
of the National Academy of Sciences (IOM), he serves on the IOM
Roundtable on Environmental Health Sciences Research and Medicine,
and was co-chair of the Workshop Planning Group on the Environment
and Cancer. He also was Chair of an IOM committee on Ethnic and
Racial Disparities in Health Care and is a co-editor of the study
report, Unequal Treatment: Confronting Racial and Ethnic Disparities
in Health Care.
