In our effort to alleviate problems faced by non-English speaking patients at our Health Care institutions we realise the need to develop translations of various materials already existent in English. Bridging the Communication Gap

Linguistic and cultural barriers represent a serious threat to the quality of and access to
health care services, with serious consequences to patients’ health conditions and
functioning of health care services.Cultural adaptation of written materials is necessary because of the role of translated materials in the communicative process and interaction between health care service providers and patients. The authors propose that all material originally written in English should go through a process of cultural adaptation as opposed to translation, in order to better suit the needs and characteristics of the Latino population regarding health care.

The purpose of this paper is development of an evaluation framework based on research and a theoretical foundation. The development of a two-section instrument to assess the cultural adequacy of health related written material, either developed in Spanish or written in English and translated into Spanish, to be used with Latinos in the USA.
