Benefits of Pre-recorded Voice Messages

Pre-recorded voice messages are a low-tech solution that can be used to increase language access for limited English patients.

Pre-recorded voice message systems are computer-based, automated telephone systems that enable callers to hear a recorded voice in their native language and respond to commands via the telephone keypad. Patients can remotely access all components of these systems from any touch-tone phone, including designated phones inside hospitals and clinics or from phones outside of the facility.

Using this technology as a tool, patients can dial into a number to access health information or to get instructions on how to access and use health services. These instructions could include general health information and even self-monitoring approaches for chronic care conditions. Participants can be asked to complete satisfaction questionnaires about their experience with the phone system and the benefits they associate with this service.

Pre-recorded messages can:

  • Give patients an option they are familiar and comfortable with in technology that is easily accessible.
  • Accommodate dozens of different patient languages, allowing a greater capacity for multiple users.
  • Ensure widespread accessibility to the system since most patients have access to and can use a telephone.
  • Be more convenient for patients because no additional equipment is needed, allowing system access from home, from work, or when traveling.
  • Minimize cost while providing easy access to health information in several languages with a simple telephone call.
