A clinical teaching and evaluation process which utilizes a standard patient for performance based assessments for medical students. An extension and implementation of the standardized patient program to provide assessments for conditions present in the Latino Community.

of Molina Healthcare, Inc. She received her medical degree
at UC Irvine and her Masters in Business degree at Pepperdine
University. She received her residency training through
UCLA at Santa Monica Hospital where she served as Chief
Resident. She currently holds the position of Executive
Vice President, Research and Development. Dr. Bernadett's
interest in designing innovative approaches to improving
access to healthcare for the underserved population is
evident in her pursuit and receipt of grants supporting
patient care access and cultural competency, the development
of a literacy program and development of continuing medical
education programs for physicians on doctor-patient communication
and plain language.

UC Irvine will provide cases, checklists, training manuals and other exam support materials. This information will be available to other interested educational programs at the end of the project. Through academic preparation the candidates will learn: roles and responsibilities of an interpreter in healthcare settings, basic knowledge of common medical conditions, treatments and procedures, medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, language and cultural nuances for specific populations, application of interpreting skills in English and language services, professional development.

The program will focus on:
a) Develop standardized clinical cases that focus on clinical conditions which have a high level of incidence and prevalence in the Latino community.
b) Develop Case Specific Checklist to measure the students’ knowledge and attitude related to specific Latino beliefs, values and culture.
c) Develop language specific training and assessment support materials.
d) Train medical students to work with on-site and telephone interpreters as part of the standardized patient setting, integrating the CHIA Interpreter Standards as applicable.
e) Employ a bilingual standardized patient trainer who recruits and trains Latino standardize patients for assessments.
f) Develop measures for outcomes.
g) Distribute Latino cases, checklists, training manuals and other exam support materials to other interested educational programs at the end of the project.
