Samford After Sundown 
Samford After Sundown, a non-credit, continuing education
unit within Metro College at Samford University, offers
a collection of professional and personal development
opportunities to the Birmingham metropolitan community
on campus at Samford University, online and on-site at
area businesses. Samford After Sundown's Healthcare Interpreter
Training Certificate Program is the first program in the
Southeast designed to train bilingual and bicultural students
to develop the knowledge, skills, abilities and awareness
for effective language interpretation in healthcare settings.
Through academic preparation, practical skills training
and service in local healthcare facilities, candidates
will gain: a) an understanding of the roles and responsibilities
of a healthcare interpreter; b) basic knowledge of common
medical conditions, treatments and procedures; c) insight
into language and cultural nuances of Latino communities;
and d) interpreting skills in English and Spanish. Upon
completion of coursework and field experiences, candidates
will earn a certificate of completion and continuing education
units.

As Director of the Samford After Sundown program in Metro
College at Samford University, Katie is responsible for
planning, administering and coordinating all professional
and personal development courses offered to the Birmingham
community through this continuing education unit.

to the establishment of the program by supporting staff
participation providing staff time for training and by
serving as an internship site for the program.

The Healthcare Interpreter
Training (HIT) certificate program is the first program
in the Southeast designed to train bilingual and bicultural
students to develop the awareness, knowledge and skills
necessary for effective language interpretation in health
care settings. The curriculum of the Healthcare Interpreter
Training Certificate Program is currently being established
in nine colleges across the country. Upon completion of
coursework and a field internship, students receive a
certificate in healthcare interpretation. The HIT program’s
mission is to improve the quality and quantity of interpreters
eligible to work in the health care setting.
